Celebrating 75 Years at The King George Historical Society

The Ralph Bunche Alumni Association (RBAA) accepted a Resolution signed by King George County Board of Supervisor’s Chairman, T.C. Collins and presented by County Administrator, Mr. Matthew Smolnik, which stated,
“ A RESOLUTION OF THE KING GEORGE COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS RECOGNIZING THE 75th ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEDICATION OF RALPH BUNCHE HIGH SCHOOL: WHEREAS, Ralph Bunche High School was constructed as a result of Margaret Smith, et al. v. School Board of King George County, Virginia, et al., Richmond Civil Action No. 631; and, WHEREAS, Ralph Bunche High School replaced King George Training School, originally called Edge hill Training School, built in 1916; and, WHEREAS, Ralph Bunche High School was named in honor of Dr. Ralph Bunche, a notable scholar, statesman, and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1950; and, WHEREAS, Ralph Bunche High School was dedicated on September 2, 1949; and, WHEREAS, Ralph Bunche High School served African American students until 1968 upon full integration of King George County Schools; and, WHEREAS, the Ralph Bunche Alumni Association was established in 1975 to preserve the heritage and legacy of Ralph Bunche High School; and, WHEREAS, Ralph of Historic Places on May 1, 2006; and, WHEREAS, September 2, 2024 marks the 75th anniversary of the dedication of Ralph Bunche High School; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the King George County Board of Supervisors hereby declares September 2, 2024 as “Ralph Bunche Dedication Anniversary Day” in King George County.
