The King George Historical Society welcomed a full house on June 18 for an engaging presentation, "The Leedstown Resolutions," by local historian Dal Mallory.
Mr. Mallory shared the remarkable story of the Leedstown Resolutions, which were signed in 1766 as a bold response to the British Stamp Act. The resolutions called upon Virginians to resist the unjust tax and refuse to comply with the law. Considered one of the earliest organized acts of resistance to British authority in the American colonies, the Leedstown Resolutions are recognized as a significant precursor to the Declaration of Independence. Their adoption helped hinder enforcement of the Stamp Act and demonstrated the growing resolve of colonial Virginians to defend their rights.
Throughout the evening, Mr. Mallory captivated the audience with his extensive knowledge of local and colonial history. A former member of the Westmoreland History Documentation Committee, appointed by the Westmoreland County Board of Supervisors, he is also the author of Westmoreland County Virginia Cemeteries. His passion for preserving and sharing our region's history was evident throughout the presentation.
The King George Historical Society was thrilled to see such a wonderful turnout. It was an evening filled with learning, thoughtful discussion, and a renewed appreciation for the important role our local communities played in the story of America's founding.
We are truly fortunate to have historians like Dal Mallory who generously share their expertise and help keep our rich local heritage alive. Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the evening such a success, and a special thank you to Mr. Mallory for an outstanding presentation.
We look forward to seeing you at our next King George Historical Society program!
