On April 16, 2026, the King George Historical Society welcomed members and guests for an outstanding presentation by Dr. Robert Gates, titled "Success of the Navy in Dahlgren: Inevitable or Visionary Leadership?"

Dr. Gates led attendees on a fascinating journey through the history of the U.S. Navy's presence in Dahlgren, exploring whether the installation's remarkable success was simply the result of its ideal location or the product of visionary leadership and decades of innovation.

Founded in 1918 as the Naval Proving Ground, Dahlgren was chosen for its location along the Potomac River, where naval guns could be safely tested over long distances. Over the past century, the installation has evolved into the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division, one of the Navy's premier research, development, testing, and engineering facilities. Today, Dahlgren plays a critical role in advancing technologies that support the nation's defense, including missile systems, combat systems, cybersecurity, and directed energy research.

Drawing on his extensive knowledge of the installation's history, Dr. Gates demonstrated how strong leadership, scientific excellence, and a commitment to innovation transformed Dahlgren into a world-renowned center for naval research. His presentation highlighted the leaders, engineers, scientists, and military personnel whose vision and dedication shaped the installation's growth and enduring impact.

Attendees also gained a greater appreciation for the close relationship between Dahlgren and King George County. For more than a century, the installation has been a cornerstone of the local community, providing employment, supporting education, driving technological advancement, and contributing to the county's economic vitality. The story of Dahlgren is inseparable from the story of King George itself.

The lecture sparked lively discussion and offered new perspectives on one of the county's most important institutions. Whether attendees had long-standing connections to the Naval Support Facility or were learning its history for the first time, everyone left with a deeper understanding of the vision and leadership that helped shape Dahlgren into the world-class organization it is today.

The King George Historical Society extends its sincere appreciation to Dr. Robert Gates for sharing his expertise and providing such an engaging and thought-provoking presentation. Programs like this help preserve our community's history while fostering a greater appreciation for the people and institutions that continue to shape King George County.

If you were unable to attend, we encourage you to watch the recorded presentation, which will be available on the King George Historical Society website and YouTube channel. It is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the remarkable history and lasting legacy of the Navy in Dahlgren.
