2016 KG Historical Society Metal Christmas Ornament – Emanuel Episcopal Church
This beautifully cast metal ornament commemorates Emanuel Episcopal Church, a historic Gothic Revival gem nestled in Port Conway, King George County. Completed in 1859–60 and consecrated in 1860, the church is attributed—on stylistic grounds—to the Baltimore architectural firm Niernsee & Neilson.
Though modest in scale, the church exudes architectural presence through its soaring entrance tower capped with an Italianate bracketed cornice and its striking buttressed, Gothic-arched façade—all rendered in refined red brick.
Emmanuel Church carries profound historical resonance—it was damaged during the Civil War yet remains in active use today, preserving its original gallery and a rare Henry Erben pipe organ housed within a Gothic-style case . As the subject of the 2016 ornament, it celebrates both architectural elegance and enduring community heritage—making it a cherished keepsake for collectors and local history enthusiasts alike.
