2014 KG Historical Society Metal Christmas Ornament – Office Hall
This charming metal ornament honors Office Hall, the remaining vestiges of an early‑19th century plantation once nestled in southeastern King George County. Today, the site is marked by two remarkably preserved brick outbuildings—a two-story detached kitchen and a pyramidal‑roofed smokehouse—both integral to the operations of the original estate and notable for their architectural resilience.
These structures are exceptionally rare: the kitchen, dating from around 1805–1820, is one of the very few surviving one-room, two-story brick plantation kitchens in Virginia, complete with refined Federal-style detailing and a second-story chamber reachable only by an exterior staircase . The smokehouse, equally distinctive, features a unique roof structure built with false joists and outriggers—a design seldom seen in vernacular architecture.
This keepsake ornament, released in 2014, pays tribute to these architectural gems—echoes of plantation life, craftsmanship, and regional history—preserving their legacy in a small but meaningful celebration of King George County heritage.
